Calling my shot now: the New Jersey Giants are stepping into the 2023 season as the most OVERRATED team in the entire league. They open up with the Cowboys on SNF tonight and I had to sit through a podcast where Peter Schraeger and Bill Simmons talked about how they believe in Daniel Jones more than Dak Prescott. The Danny Dimes reaissance is one of the more ridiculous narratives we’ve had in the last decade. He finally had a somewhat productive season after 5 years and all of a sudden we’ve got guys like Greg Jennings vaulting him into the top 10. Let’s talk about these frauds.
First, Daniel Jones is as average as it gets. I guess he doesn’t “suck” anymore, but I’d definitely say he’s far from good. Brian Daboll basically just turned him into much more of a runner last season and it worked surprisingly well because he’s not a bad athlete. My interpretation of that was Daboll just squeezing all he could out of the limited QB before they began the search for the next guy. Next thing I know, the Giants FO is forking out $250 Million for Daniel Fucking Jones. As a Cowboys fan, I’m pretty far from shaking in my boots. He’s only ever beaten us once in the covid season from hell so the thought of getting to play him twice a year for the next 6 years is awesome!
Aside from Dimes, the Giants aren’t exactly stacked on weapons. Darren Waller and Saquon Barkely are probably gonna be 99% of their offense, and they aren’t exactly the epitome of health. They’ve whiffed on every WR they’ve tried to sign or draft for years and it’s cost them big time. We’ll see if Jalin Hyatt ends up being worth a fuck (I have my doubts). Week 1 could be a revenge game for him because of that viral combine video of him with the Dallas coaches. The only pass catcher you’d ever consider for fantasy here is Darren Waller, but be prepared for him to miss 14 games with a lingering soft tissue injury. Good luck with that.
The Giants defense isn’t all that imposing either. Dexter Lawrence is a beast up the middle and Kayvon Thibodeaux looks like he could be an elite pass rush threat for years to come. However, they haven’t really filled in the gaps past that and leave a lot to be desired elsewhere. I can’t really think of anyone in their secondary other than rookie Deonte Banks, and I doubt that’s enough to really slow teams down. They did just make a savy move trading for Isaiah Simmons while only giving up a 7th. The Cardinals weren’t able to figure him out though and I’d be surprised if New Jersey had the keys to unlock his unique potential.
The Giants surprised everyone last year by making the playoffs and actually winning a real playoff game. In my opinion they’re gonna need another spritz from Lady Luck to make that happen again. Now they have expectations and $250M QB who better not start fucking up again or it’s gonna get ugly quick. I hate the Giants so that would be an ideal scenario for me. Daboll is a good coach though so if you want to believe in this team it has to start with him. Good luck to all the New Jersey fans out there.
